Weekend Festivities

This weekend was definately one of celebration! Friday was national independence day, and then Saturday night 'til Tuesday marked the end of the fasting month.

On Friday morning, we took an excursion to the flag-raising ceremony downtown. There were uniformed soldiers, government workers, and highschool students who took part in the ceremony. There was also a band to play the national anthem, and various dignitaries who said a few words and read selections of the national Constitution. It was interesting to see that.

On Saturday night, a group of us headed downtown to a friend's place, where we parked motorbikes & hung out until the big parade was to start. After a while, some of us went out to grab a bite to eat. By the time we returned to the friend's house, traffic was terrible. We were on foot, and it was still hard to find enough room to move comfortably at one point! We walked from her house to the central parade location, and saw the tail end of a couple floats heading down the street away from us. That was the end of the parade...we had missed it! The good news is that we still got to see some fireworks.

On Sunday morning, a couple of us got up very early & headed downtown to witness the annual group prayer. It was cool to see. When the time came for us to leave, we realized we had a problem--her bike was hedged in by both other motorbikes and by a street full of people! Fortunately, everyone else was clearing out at the same time as we were, so we didn't have to wait long 'til we could get away.

Over the next couple days, my roommates & I visited four homes to celebrate with friends. We were fed lots of snacks, drinks, sticky rice, yummy chicken & broth, and various other dishes. Delicious!
